Pricing Your Crafts
Sunday April 8, 2007
How much is too much to charge for your crafts? How much is too little? Believe it or not, most crafters charge way too little for their products. If you are hearing feedback from your customers that they like the product, but the price is too high then you may have an issue with high prices. However, the chances are that you are not charging enough for your hand-made items. When calculating price, make sure you include raw materials, advertising expenses (shows, Web site fees, etc...) and last but not least, make sure you are calculating payment for your time!

I completely agree with this.
I few folks charge crazy prices for their things - think famous designers.
BUT, most people barely charge for the supplies that were used.
When I’ve asked some of them why they about give their crafts away, I hear “It’s only a hobby.” or “I only make these things for something to do.”
Yes, it is very aggravating to those of us who are trying to make a living.
Another price issue involves quality. I see soaps… that were from a melt & pour kit and full of chemicals like artificial colors and scents… sell for the same or only a little less than I sell my REAL handmade soaps… made with my organic herbs & flowers… and only naturally colored and scented.
This is irritating because someone will buy one of the cheaply made and artificial sopas… and then I’ll see them somewhere at a shop or at my little gift shop and hear their stories about how they can’t use “Handmade” soap because it gave them a rash or something. Some of these folks I can explain the difference too and they will give mine a try. Once they see the difference, I get great compliments on my soaps… .
