Pricing Your Crafts

When you are calculating your prices, make sure you always include paying yourself! Many newbies and even some veteran craft
sellers forget this important part of pricing. If you simply make enough money to cover your materials and do not allow for
things like labor, marketing (show fees, Web site, etc.) you may sell lots of crafts, however you will be losing money and
hurting your long term growth.

The way I determine my selling price is to 1) determine how much per hour my time is worth to me, 2)keep close time by the minute as to how long it takes to make the product, 3)develop a spreadsheet to include production time, material cost, shop overhead, and a % factor to cover miscellaneous matters. Add it up and see if the resulting price makes sense in your marketplace. If not, don’t make the product. I have a form that I use and will be happy to share it.

I’m glad to know that I’m not the only one out here who has problems with valuing my time and products!
This might also help my comedian husband as well, since we create his CD’s and DVD’s that he sells after his shows.
