101 Dumbest Moments in Business

Sunday December 23, 2007
A fun little list from CNN with their choices for the dumbest moments in business. Reminds me of stupid things I have done a shows though the years. Including, but not limited to, traveling for over 18 hours to a wholesale show and forgetting not only half of our display, but our paperwork... What's your dumbest business moment of all time?

Not that it is horrible, but I did forget to bring bags to a show once. I did “freak out” thinking how are these people going to be able to take their products home. Many had bags already and just used them and the others held them until they purchased items from a neighbor willing to part with a plastic bag - usually resulting in a purchase too. I know I won’t do that again.

The dumbest thing I ever did involved a last minute customer at a show. We were in the process of packing up when a “be back” showed up asking about a pen she had looked at earlier. We still had it and she wanted it and a wooden box to present the pen in. “Did we want a credit card or a check?” she asked. Since the knuckle buster was already packed I said “a check is fine.” “Would you like to see my ID?” said she? “Pffftt, we’ve NEVER had a bad check a a show, I don’t need to see an ID from you.” said I. Needless to say that check bounced and ever since we’ve gotten proper ID ;-)

We are loosing lots of sales because we don’t (currenty) accept credit cards, fortuatly one of our friends who also does many arts and craft shows per year is teaching us that we can simply buy a manual machine for only about $60. We will then be able to place the customers card on our low tech machine and make an imprint.

I drove to Art Expo in NY from Miami, Fl. and left my charger for my credit card machine at home.(I had the CC company overnight me, a new one.) Another time I pushed the wrong button for charging it, so I went to the show without the machine being charged. Didn’t figure it out until showtime..
