Artist or Crafter
Sunday April 13, 2008
A big part of defining your business plan as a creative individual is determining what you would describe yourself and your
creations as. Typically a "craft" can be reproduced again and again. Of course quality can come into play in any case,
however "art" is usually described as something unique and one-of-a-kind. Once you determine what you make, you can determine
the type of shows that would sell your creations the best.

I wrote an article about my opinion, please read the following:

Both Art and Craft sometimes can be consider very related.Maybe we could be Artcrafters. I do porcelain dolls and never repeat one and it is very imposible to do two exactly the same.In spanish we are called Artesanos and this word has art in it.
I believe an Artist is someone who designs something from scratch and makes the finished product, whatever the media. Whereas a Craftsperson is someone who follows or copies a pattern designed by someone else.
So, What you are saying is that a Photographer cannot be an artist and a Painter that paints from photographs cannot be an artist. Would they be Craftsman.
I agree with Kammy. Most of us use products in our arts/crafts which were made by someone else but the following the other person’s pattern is the difference.
I knit and without a pattern. When I sit down with my yarn and figure stuff out I’m an artist. If I took someone’s pattern and followed it again and again and again I’d be crafting.
I think the problem is that one word seems to mean something is BETTER and I don’t think that’s the truth!
Yes I agree with Kay. I knit too and don’t use others patterns. I don’t like the connotation that Crafters are just copiers of others patterns or designs. It sounds like we are not creative enough to come up with an idea on our own we have to use someone elses, that our work is not of value or worth. Look at the Arts and Crafts movement 100 years ago. They considered themselves craftsmen and came up with a whole new design concept (hand vs machine). I always thought of myself as a crafter in that light not as an artist as in fine art but as someone who did quality hand work.
My work is craft because of the techniques and tools used, however they are each one of a kind. Art or craft? I prefer to think of my of myself as an artisan. Craft can denote anything from macaroni pictures to popsicle stick constructions. I have taken years to learn sewing, pattern making and a wide range of fiber arts in which I minored in college.
