Don't forget - April 15 is both the due date for your Form 1040 and the first estimated tax depositing date for the new year.
Here's some info on how to request a six-month extension to file your Form 1040 if need be:
- Request an extension to file by submitting Form 4868
This can be mailed (postmarked on or before 4/15). You can e-file an extension request using tax preparation software with your own computer or by going to a tax preparer who has the software.
Although keep in mind that it's an extension to file the 1040 not an extension to pay any tax due. So, if your return is completed but you are unable to pay the full amount of tax due, do not request an extension. File your return on time and pay as much as you can. You'll subsequently receive a bill for the remaining balance.
