The August 2010 edition of Martha Stewart Living (link to online presence - however, braid instructions have not yet posted) has a great article on how to use braiding to make various craft items. I'm not a big fan of home-spun looking crafts but there are very good instructions to make a braided bracelet - which is a perpetual favorite in the jewelry arena.
And, right now, wrapped leather bracelets by Fashion Institute and Designer alumna, Chan Luu, are very popular with celebrities.
