Copyright and Taxes

Monday December 8, 2003
From the forum: "I'm thinking about crocheting blankets and hats to sell for a small profit. However I don't do my own designs to I would be taking them off the internet and from books. I know these are copyrighted so that you can't reproduce the patterns without permission, but is that limited to the actual pattern or do I need to get permission to sell the actual blanket/hat I make from the pattern?

I'm also wondering about taxes. I know that's a much more involved question than the first one but I'm having trouble finding the right info myself so any knowledge you have or links you can provide would be appreciated! I have heard that if you make past a certain dollar figure per year selling stuff you've made then the government considers it a business. Is this true, and if so, what is that dollar figure?"
