One of the first things you will need for your business is a name. The name of your business is your identity and you should make sure the name you choose comes across well to your future customers. This requires some thought and planning. Here are some tips to help you decide on what your business’s name will be.

  • The ”Remember Factor” – How easy is it for people to remember the name of your business? In case people try to find you online or at another craft show, the easier your name is to remember, the easier it will be for repeat customers to find you.

  • Copyright Issues – Make sure your name is not already taken! For instance, your last name may be Walton or Walters, but I would advise against calling your business in that craft booth “Wal-Mart”! To check on names that may already be copyrighted in the U.S., go to http://cocatalog.loc.gov

  • Using Your Own Name – Of course you can always name your business after yourself. This is especially recommended for fine artists or crafters specializing in unique one-of-a-kind creations.

  • Relates to your Craft – Another good way to create a name for your business is to gear it towards your particular craft. Using your name and/or the craft you make, you can sometimes come up with a memorable, unique name for you business.

  • Domain Availability – These days, almost any business will want an Internet presence. This is very true in crafting. To help decide on a name, one of the factors should be whether the business name or some derivative of it is available in a domain name. One good place to check for the availability of a domain is: www.networksolutions.com
