Moulage is a fashion design term where the designer fits or molds the fabric directly on the model or dressmaker dummy. It’s a very interesting fashion design process that allows the fashion designer to create in three dimensions rather than one – such as when a sketching a design. It’s also a great way to see how the fabric will drape and to match patterns in the fabric.
Moulage can be used to both create a garment directly model to fabric and use to make the pattern for the garment that will be laid out on the fabric to cut around. Many haute couture designers utilize this method. If you’re a fan of television shows such as The Fashion Show or Project Runway, you see that many designers use this method.
If you’re a casual home sewer with a dressmaker’s dummy set up with your precise measurements, it’s a wonderful way to craft yourself some unique garment items that will have your friends and co-workers green with envy.
