Inexpensive Stock Images

Adding Images to Web Sites

By , About.com Guide

It's hard to always be able to shoot just the right images for your web site. Additionally, sometimes you don't have the right camera equipment to take the perfect shot. However, having appropriate images builds user interest, helps illustrate articles and is a good selling technique for Ecommerce products. Find out where to purchase inexpensive (or free) images to use on your arts and crafts web site.

Two important things to remember are to always check restrictions on use - especially commerical versus editorial and model releases.

1. Dreamstime.com

Stock photography from over 87,199 photographers with over 7 million royalty-free stock images relating to a variety of different subjects.  So you pay for the image only once and then you can use it as many times as you like, with just a few restrictions (see dreamstime.com for complete details).

High-resolution, you can use the images to make fine art prints, on websites, for educational projects, in magazines, newspapers, books or booklets, covers for books, flyers, or any other advertising and promotional materials, in either printed or electronic media, as long as the item in which the image appears doesn't contradict any restrictions per dreamstime or the photographer (all restrictions are clearly given for each image).

2. Free Digital Photos.Net

Categories of images on this web site include: animals, business and industry, celebrations, everyday items, food and drink, natural world, people, places, sports and leisure, and transportation. There are free versions of the images, for which you must provide a link back to FreeDigitalPhotos.net and paid-for versions which don't require a link back.

You can use the images for the following purposes:

  • Photos may be used for personal, educational and corporate work
  • Photos may be used in products that are sold, but only where the photos are used for illustration or decoration
  • Photos may not be used on products where the image is the sole reason someone would buy the product - for example greetings cards, mugs, calendars and T-shirts.

3. Fotolia
