Chainmail Earrings

Jenny Lawson

I think it's always helpful to share ideas on how we run our arts /crafts businesses regardless if we're beginners or have been operating a craft business for years. I never walk away from a seminar, class or a discussion with another crafter without learning something new.

Jenny Lawson, located in Australia, crafts chainmaille, wire wrapping and beaded jewelry. She sells her designs online and in retail shops and has agreed to answer a few questions on how she runs her craft business.

How do you approach jewelry designing? Do you keep a design sketchbook, or just get out your tools and look for the materials to inspire you?

I usually start with some sort of rough design in my head only, and then I look for the materials and design as I go. Having said that, not all of my work is from my own designs. I find them from free tutorials on the internet, or from books or magazines. But I usually change them quite a bit from the original designs.

How long have you been a jewelry-designer? How did you get started?

I've done all sorts of crafts for as long as I can remember (I'm 46 years old). I dabbled with jewelry making as a kid, but I only got into jewelry making seriously a couple of years ago. I started when I discovered chainmail, and taught myself how to do it; this led to wire work, and then beadweaving.

Do you make multiples of each design or are they one-of-a-kind?

I usually only make one of each piece, because I love doing new things all the time.

Your designs are so cool and elaborate yet your prices are so reasonable - your time management jewelry-making skills must be well honed. What do you think is the key to your success in this area?

I just spend a lot of time making them, I keep everything set up on the kitchen table and close by. We don't get to use the table anymore for anything else!

I noticed you have a lot of free tutorials (your update states they are moving to your blog) - Your instructions are very well crafted. Do you find the time spent on this section pays for itself in terms of conversions to sales?

I think the tutorials have helped people to notice my site and therefore my work. I'll have to give full credit to friend Allegra Connor for the tutorials. She made a tutorial on using inscape to make them. She also helped me learn to make the 3d ornaments using Right Angle Weave. She is a very talented lady.

Do you sell kits to accompany your free tutorials? How about lessons? I notice you have a retail presence, do you offer classes for fans of your designs who live in your area?

No I don't sell kits, or do lessons or classes locally. But it is something I've been thinking about.

Thank you to Jenny Lawson of Craft Cove for sharing some info on how she runs her craft business.
